Welcome Space, a weekly drop-in outreach activity at the Old Meeting Church, was highly commended in this year’s United Reformed Church’s Community Awards. Volunteers and regular visitors were absolutely delighted to receive the award and have held a party to celebrate. Welcome Space first opened its doors almost four years ago, and a monthly Repair Café was added from the start of this year.
The presentation took place at this year’s URC General Assembly held in Swanwick, Derbyshire, in early July. Lynda Burton, the church secretary, was delighted to be presented with the award on behalf of all those involved in the project and to be congratulated warmly by our Moderator, Rev Steve Faber. In addition to the plaque which will be proudly displayed in the church, the church also received an award of £1000 which will be spent on other community projects.
It was fitting to receive this commendation this year when the Old Meeting Church is celebrating its 300th Anniversary. Still to come is a Five Mile Sponsored Walk from Coventry Cathedral to Bedworth, a visit to the dungeon in Warwick Gaol where our first minister Rev Julius Saunders was imprisoned for two years in 1684, a Knitted Harvest, a Classical Concert and Pink Sunday in October, a Poppy Festival in November and much more.
