Building New Forms of Church from the Ground Up by Rev Anji Barker
Since April, the pioneer teams have been in full swing — generating energy, building momentum, and leaning into the longer days as summer approaches. We call this our “Top of the Funnel” approach: casting the net wide through as many varied, regular activities as possible to draw neighbours into genuine encounter with Christ.
 
Incarnational Presence:
Embedded in the Neighbourhood
This is rooted in what we call incarnational presence — the practice of embedding ourselves within our neighbourhoods, not as programme deliverers but as fellow residents sharing in the everyday life of the community.
We believe that authentic transformation begins when we “enflesh hope” — showing up consistently, vulnerably, and with no agenda beyond faithful Christian neighbourliness. It is this mutual sharing of life that creates the soil from which something new can grow.
Kairos Moments
In order to build the deep connections that form the basis of a worshipping community, we need to be present — regularly, visibly, and with open hands. Over time, as trust develops and relationships deepen, we begin to experience kairos moments: those Spirit-led moments where God connects us as people of  significance in one another’s journeys. These are not engineered. They emerge from faithful, incarnational engagement — joining in with what God is already doing in the neighbourhood.   

 

Core Connective Ministry:

Going Out into the Community
This is the core connective piece of pioneer ministry. We go out into the community as people who are fully Christian and integral in our faith, trusting God to connect us each day with those He has prepared for us to meet.
We do not impose transformation from the outside; rather, we believe that every community holds God-given potential waiting to be released. We work to nurture and draw out what is already there — the gifts, resilience, and capacity for flourishing that exist within every neighbourhood, no matter how overlooked.
 
Communities of Shalom
Over time, the work of the Holy Spirit in each of our lives becomes evident. As we journey together — sharing meals, solving problems, celebrating and grieving side by side — communities of sincere discipleship begin to emerge.
These are not congregations planted from above but seedbeds of shalom grown from below, rooted in the relationships and rhythms of the neighbourhood itself.
We see these communities as the basis of a new type of church that God is birthing amongst us – and feel excited to see shoots of hope and transformation already emerging in our neighbourhoods as we pray, serve and seek to be models of a different way to live as followers of Jesus.
 
This is our vision and hope for the communities of: Firs and Bromford • Weoley Castle • Northfield • Winson Green • Blakenall • Rodborough • and beyond.
