Grant Support Guidance

General Property Grants

• The level of support to be normally up to 50%, with a maximum grant of £50,000; these represent an increase from the current 25% and £30,000 respectively. However, regard will be given to the level of a church’s own resources in assessing the level of Synod contribution.
• However, this support is intended for larger, cyclical or one-off repairs rather than day-to-day maintenance, and it will not normally be given for projects of less than £3,000, although this level may be varied for smaller churches.

Major Building Development Grants

• These will be retained for larger projects. The level of support would still normally be up to 50%, but grants would exceed £50,000.
• The criteria should be widened from the current “to facilitate the extension, rebuilding or conversion to new purposes of church buildings” to also embrace major refurbishments and works to enable buildings to be used more effectively and flexibly.
• Support will also be provided towards the costs of professional feasibility studies.
• Projects should have a clear missionary focus.

Mission Grants

• The level of support to be normally up to 75%, with continuation funding being permissible in case where the project has proved to be successful.
• However, the existing level of support for minor and digital projects would remain.
• That assistance may be available for IT equipment, website development, noticeboards etc. provided it can be demonstrated that this has a missional focus, and is not primarily just for the existing congregation.
• As with other grants, the level of a church’s own resources will be taken into account in assessing the level of Synod contribution.

Submission of Applications:

We strongly recommend that you discuss your application with the appropriate Synod Officer before submitting it. This assists the Synod in having a greater understanding of the project, but also means that advice can be given on the information which will be required to enable a swift decision to be taken.

Retrospective applications will not normally be approved, unless a Synod Officer has agreed before any work is undertaken that the matter is urgent and that work should proceed.
